So, as we were sitting in English class this Wednesday, I
decided to go ahead and email a few places I was interested in
volunteering. The thought occurred to me
to just wait until the evening, when I could email from the comfort of my own
computer. Knowing, however tempting this
was, that the chances of me remembering to do this were slim to none, I emailed
the only service provider I could think of off the top of my head. This was Natalie’s Second Chance, a “no-kill
dog shelter” in Lafayette, whose poster I had seen in the College of Liberal
Arts advising office some time before Winter Break. I went ahead and emailed, explaining that I
was a student at Purdue and that I had an assignment in class that required me
to commit to thirty service hours of volunteer work. I included my previous experience of working
at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, indicated my flexible Saturday availability, and
sent the email.
A few short hours later, as I was walking out of my last
class of the day, I received a notification on my iPhone, indicating that the
shelter had emailed me back. Reading the
email on my phone, I saw that it was a volunteer who had emailed me back,
saying I was welcome to come in and volunteer.
She said work would consist mostly of walking dogs and possibly
office-related tasks. The email said to
stop by before 8:00 on Saturday, and they would get me set up. I still haven’t replied to the email, but I
should really try to get to the shelter this weekend and get all “set up” as
they said. I know I have a decent amount
of time before my service hours are due, but I really want to get started early
in case anything comes up.
